7 Tips to Decorate Your First Apartment on a Dime

AS_DimeWell, you did it. You finally packed up that little life of yours and are officially moving into your first apartment. Look at you, adulting and stuff! Once you get over the chaos of putting everything you own into cardboard boxes and hauling it to your new abode, there’s just one thing left to do: make that humble abode a home. And nothing says “home” like the decor of your apartment. But wait a minute…are you thinking, “Decor? Isn’t that a fancy word for ‘decorations’? Sounds expensive.” Fear not, my budget-conscious friend. We’re here to give you some ways to save on turning your place into a whimsical wonderland (or a decked out den, or a pretty pad…whatever you want to call it, really). Follow our guide and you’ll be the king or queen of your quaint castle in no time.

1. Pull a Macklemore and Thrift Shop It

There’s a reason the dude wrote an entire song about it; $50 for a t-shirt is just too much, and it might even be too much for your dream piece of furniture. Check out thrift stores, consignment stores, and vintage stores for a wide variety of items, but especially furniture like dressers, tables, side tables, lamps, and even chairs. And don’t be turned off if it’s the wrong color or if you get a few mismatched items; a coat of spray paint can do wonders, and having variety in your decor shakes things up.

2. Become an Artist

Whether you’re looking to decorate the walls or add some flair to the bathroom, when all else fails, create your own art! Art supply and craft stores sells canvases on the cheap; buy some paint and go crazy, or feel free to experiment with existing art. When you’re at the thrift shop, be sure to check out the art section. Most of it you can update to something you like, or use the frame for something you like better.

3. Stick It On

If you’re not as confident in your own creativity, try looking at removable wallpaper or wall decals. They easily spruce up the look of a room and they won’t make you lose your security deposit. There are tons of cheap options and it’s a lot easier than full-on painting.

4. Be the Captain of Hooks

When it comes to storage and small spaces, hooks are your friend! Use removable hooks to hang jewelry, clothing, towels, and even artwork and plants. Speaking of plants…

5. Buy a Plant

Plants have a way of making a house instantly feel like a home. And it gives you a reason to use that vintage watering jug you just bought at the thrift shop. Did we mention it also circulates oxygen, making your house more breathable (literally!).

6. Buy Flexible Furniture

If you’re short on space, this is especially helpful: when buying certain pieces of furniture, take into consideration whether they could serve more than one purpose. For instance, instead of getting a coffee table, try using two big poofs with a tray on top. That way, when you have extra people over at your housewarming party, they have a place to sit. (The more people you invite, the more snacks and drinks they bring. Priorities, people.)

7. If All Else Fails, Rent It

Alright, we get it. You hate thrift stores, you’re picky, you’re a student, and furniture is NOT cheap. If you struggle with all four of these things, we suggest taking a look at renting your furniture. It’s affordable, saves time, and best of all, you can change up the look every year!
