The holidays are upon us, which means it’s time to start decorating (if you haven’t already.) Between gifts, travel expenses if you go out of town, and hosting family and friends, the holidays can become a an expensive time of year. However, decorations don’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of traditional holiday decorations you can make yourself that are much cheaper than buying them outright. Here are a few of our favorite DIY holiday ideas to make your home and bank account happy:
Bow Wreath
Traditional wreaths can be on the pricier side, especially if you add extras like lights. Instead, decorate your doors with wreaths made out of present bows. All you’ll need is a Styrofoam wreath (available at most craft stores), a bunch of bows in different sizes and colors, and a hot glue gun.
Pillow Presents
One of the easiest ways to add holiday cheer to your home is utilizing décor you already have. Pillow presents are a fun way to spruce up your living areas or bedrooms. Just tie holiday-colored ribbon around your pillows and voila, homemade “presents” that are cheap and festive.
Unique Centerpieces
Why buy expensive flowers that wilt when you could have an affordable option that lasts year after year? Rather than flowers, fill a large vase with little things like pinecones, colorful ornaments, bows or all three! This way you can change it up the way you like for different occasions. To turn your centerpiece up a notch, spray your pinecones with metallic paint and add glitter for a beautiful effect.
Christmas Card Display
Save surface space in your apartment by displaying your Christmas cards in a new way. With clothespins and a few pieces of ribbon or even string, you can create a card tree or simply hang the cards up like a garland. There are a lot of different ways to show off your cards, so get creative!
