As the capital city of New Mexico and the fourth largest city in the state, Santa Fe never comes up short when it comes to planning things to do. Playing host to numerous festivals and functions, the city of Santa Fe is always alive with activity. Whatever your interest, the historic city of Santa Fe is sure to deliver. Whether you’re planning a short visit, or searching for an apartment in Santa Fe for an extended stay, this enchanting city will have you mesmerized.
Festivals and Entertainment
Home to a host of fiestas and festivals, Santa Fe certainly knows how to throw a party. Out of all the festivals hosted in Santa Fe, perhaps one of the most famous is Fiestas de Santa Fe. Celebrated since 1712 to commemorate the re-conquest of the city by Spanish colonists, this festival is famous for its many longtime traditions. Some of these traditions include a knighting and coronation of Don Diego de Vargas and La Reina de Santa Fe, the burning of Zozobra (a 50 ft. marionette symbolizing hardships of the past year) and a ball to conclude the celebration. Throughout all of these historical reenactments, you can enjoy local craft booths, regional foods, and mariachi bands as you wander throughout the festivities.
If you’re a foodie on the hunt for a taste of the best, check out the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta hosted every September. This five-day fiesta features local culinary artists from 75 of the city’s best restaurants. Incorporating wine from over 90 of the nation’s wineries, the goal of this party is “to keep Santa Fe on the map as a world class culinary destination.”
Food
If you’ve ever heard the official state question of New Mexico (“Red or green?”) then you know that its capital city is sure to have plenty of both… chili peppers that is! The southwestern style of food that the state is famous for is very prominent in Santa Fe. If you have a love affair with chilies, you’ve come to the right place. Be sure to stop by the Santa Fe Bite for a famous green chili burger or check out Tomisita’s restaurant, a local favorite that boasts traditional chili-based recipes that come straight from the hatch valley.
Looking for a different southwest-inspired dish? Stop by The Shed for their famous blue corn enchiladas, or try a taste of BBQ that rivals Texas at Cowgirl BBQ. Need something in a hurry? Flag down the El Molero fajita truck on the Plaza downtown for a fresh taco, burrito, or fajita that won’t break the bank. The fajitas with fresh guacamole will have your mouth watering without your wallet wavering.
