A Special Family Thanksgiving

family thanksgiving dinnerThis year is going to be a special one for our family. Even though I am a 35-year-old with two children, I will be meeting one of my uncles for the first time. He has lived in Japan for most of his life, and finally saved up enough money to visit the U.S. He is so excited about meeting his five-year-old great-niece, Amanda, and his two-year-old great-nephew, Joshua.

But that is not all. Relatives from all over the U.S. and Canada that I haven’t seen for several years are gathering at my apartment in Orlando, Fla., for our biggest family Thanksgiving to date. Twenty-five people will celebrate all we have to be grateful for, in our four-bedroom apartment on November 26.

My grandma is one of the most excited for this family gathering. She hasn’t been well in recent years, so was not able to travel from Maryland for the last two Thanksgivings. Now, she gets to be reunited with my uncle, all of our other relatives and, of course, her great-grandchildren.

Everyone has agreed to make a dish, and bring it to share, just like what I imagine the first Thanksgiving to be like. Leading up to Thanksgiving, I am feeling a surge of gratitude for the opportunity to spend time with family members who are flung all over the globe. We will create joyous memories that will last a lifetime. We will re-connect and share stories of what our lives have been like. And isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about – sharing our lives, joy and gratitude with our friends and family?

While the above is a fictional story, it is one that many Americans are experiencing this Thanksgiving. They are gathering in their apartments with friends and family from near and far, watching football, playing games, eating, laughing and relishing the time together.
