It is finally here and it may be the most important day of the entire year. No, we are not talking about Christmas or even the Fourth of July. June 3rd is National Donut (or Doughnut) Day. Sure, you won’t see any parades, fireworks, or TV specials about this day, which is celebrated every year on the first Friday in June, but you will find people lining up around the country to enjoy one of America’s favorite frosted treats. And if your apartment is in one of the following cities, you’re in luck! Your city has some of the best donuts in the country…drool on to see if your city made the cut!
Washington D.C.
Astro Doughnuts – Doughnuts at this Capitol City hotspot (owned by two childhood hockey buddies, one of whom is former NHL center Jeff Halpern) are in a league of their own. While the menu changes pretty often to accommodate the season and the whims of its chefs, keep an eye out for Astro’s Nutella donut. Then, buy them all. If you’re in the mood for something a little saltier, try an Old Bay Fried Chicken Sandwich. You’ll only regret it if you don’t. (via Thrillist)
New York City
Underwest Donuts – The brainchild of a former Chanterelle sous chef, this innovative shop popped up in the old school Westside Highway Car Wash with flavors like Maple Waffle and Cocoa-Raspberry. (via Food & Wine)
Dough – Fany Gerson’s roundabout path to doughnuts involves a cooking stint at Eleven Madison Park and running a Mexican-style popsicle stand. Now, she can be found at this Brooklyn spot frying killer yeast doughnuts and glazing them in flavors like creamy dulce de leche with slivers of toasted almond. (via Food & Wine)
Chicago
Dinkel’s Bakery – German immigrant Joseph Dinkel opened this Chicago institution in 1922 and it’s remained in the family ever since. It’s changed very little in the past 91 years, and the shop’s non-donut baked goods are legendary in their own right. But you haven’t truly experienced Dinkel’s until you’ve tasted their handmade donuts. While they’ve jumped on the maple-bacon bandwagon, you’re best off sticking with the classics: grab a Chocolate Cake donut and try to not to weep. (via The Daily Meal)
Minneapolis
Glam Doll Donuts – Residents of the Twin Cities know where to turn for a morning boost. One of Glam Doll’s most surprising and delicious treats is the Peanut Butter and Sriracha donut. The smooth and sweet peanut butter balances the heat of the Sriracha. But still – this donut is not for the faint at heart. (via Delish.com)
Oahu
Leonard’s Bakery – You may think Hawaii’s an odd spot for donut deliciousness, but hear us out. The words “malasadas and pao-doce” grab your attention on Leonard’s towering drive-in sign. The former donut—a pillowy, hole-less Portuguese donut—has locals and tourists alike flocking to the landmark bakery, Leonard’s. Fried-to-order and rolled in sugar with optional fillings (don’t skip the luscious coconut custard), these exceptionally light rounds are best consumed hot, even if the only place to eat them is in the perennially-crowded parking lot.
