While you can easily stay fit in apartments with no gym, plenty of people prefer to have a separate facility on the premises with specialized equipment. It can be nice not to have to drive to a gym which, while possibly bigger, is not within walking distance and requires steep sign-up and monthly fees. That’s why living at an apartment complex with a gym is both a time-saver and a convenient way to exercise regularly!
However, there are some things you should be careful to evaluate when looking at apartments with a gym. Keep these factors in mind when touring apartments so you can choose one with a quality gym that’s right for you.
Cardio Equipment
The first component of a healthy workout is cardiovascular exercise. Equipment that helps you get your heart rate up includes stationary bicycles, treadmills, elliptical machines, rowing machines, and stair machines.
Weight Training Equipment
The second part of a well-rounded workout routine is weight training. Free weights, a multi-purpose weight machine and/or lifting bench, or individual weight machines all fulfill this requirement.
A Variety of Equipment
In order to keep your body healthy, it’s important to change up the types of exercises you so when you work out. A gym that has a variety of machines facilitates this, so you can maintain a routine that has both variety and quality exercise.
Multiple Machines
Unless you plan on working out very late at night or very, very early in the morning, you’ll need to know that there are enough machines to go around at any given time in your apartment’s gym. While it makes sense for smaller apartments to have fewer machines than large complexes, you should keep in mind which machines you will use most when evaluating whether or not there are a sufficient number in the gym.
A Clean Facility
Evaluate the apartment’s gym for cleanliness during your tour. Is the floor clean-swept? Do the machines look dingy? If there are mirrors, are they clean? Does the gym smell clean? Gyms can be a breeding ground for germs if they aren’t cleaned regularly.
Convenient Hours
Many apartments’ gyms are open 24/7, requiring a passcode, key, or card to enter, but some may have specific, more limited hours of access. Ask about the apartment’s policy, and determine whether these hours are compatible with your workout regimen.
